Northland Science Fair 28-29. Aug 2023
Over 3,000 students across Tai Tokerau prepared for Science Fair this year. Of those 300 students exhibited their results on 253 stalls and posters. Of these, the Blue Ocean Innovation Prize was contested by over 25 entries. For the 50 judges it was really hard to decide on the winner. So this year we awarded two winners.
The 11yr old Aroaki impressed with his passion for the ocean, especially the Marine Protection Area (MPA) of the Poor Knights Islands (PKI). Aroaki research the invasive seaweed/ algae caulerpa and how to get rid of it.
The other prize winner was 16yr old Jasper Waugh with his DirtyWatts entry. Jasper not only won the Blue Ocean Innovation Prize but 3 others, including the Consistency Prize. He has been submitting winning entries at Science Fair for years.
One of the presenters Steve Davies-Colley, representing Engineering NZ, has come through Science Fair as well. It is a testament to what impact Science Fair can do to talent from Tai Tokerau.
